The Covered Staircase, also called the Scholars' Stairs, is a wooden corridor from 1642 that climbs through the citadel to the Church on the Hill. Today it has around 175 steps, down from nearly 300 at the start, and it was roofed over to shelter pupils from rain and snow on their way to school.

The story of a tunnel of steps
The wooden roof dates from 1642 and turns the staircase into a tunnel, cool in summer and sheltered in winter. It was built for a practical reason: the church and the school stood on the hill, and the climb had to be made in any weather.
Over time the number of steps dropped; today you climb around 175. It isn't a hard climb, but wear comfortable shoes and stop to look back — the light coming through the boards is beautiful in photos.
Where you arrive at the top
At the top you'll find the Church on the Hill, a Gothic church built between the 14th and 16th centuries, and a peaceful view over the town. Many guests say it's the loveliest quiet corner of Sighisoara.
The staircase is part of the classic citadel route, alongside the Clock Tower and the UNESCO old town.
A host's tip
Climb in the morning, when the steps are empty, then come down for a coffee in Citadel Square. In the evening you return to Casa Roșca, a short walk from the centre, for complete quiet.
