Around Sighisoara lie some of the loveliest villages with fortified churches in Transylvania, many on the UNESCO list. Biertan was the first added, in 1993, and the others — among them Viscri and Saschiz — were added in 1999. All can be visited on day trips, setting out from Sighisoara.
The UNESCO treasures nearby
Biertan impresses with its fortification on three sets of walls and its role as a former bishop's seat. Viscri is the preserved Saxon village, with colourful houses and a fortified church.
Saschiz, on the road to Brasov, has a hall-church and a citadel on the hill. The UNESCO site includes seven villages with fortified churches in Transylvania in all.
How to combine them in a day
Biertan works on its own or with the villages around Medias. Saschiz and Viscri link naturally, being towards Brasov. Pick two or three a day, so you have time to walk through each one rather than just tick it off.
