The fortified church of Biertan is one of the most impressive in Transylvania, and in 1993 it was the first added to the UNESCO list; the other six villages with fortified churches were added in 1999. From Sighisoara, Biertan is a day trip through hills and Saxon villages.

Why Biertan is worth it
The church rises, fortified, on a hilltop, ringed by three sets of walls and towers. For centuries it was the seat of the Saxon bishops, and the whole complex is considered a landmark of Saxon architecture.
Its fame also comes from famous details, such as the sacristy door with its intricate locking system. It's the kind of place that helps you understand why the Saxons fortified their churches.
How to get there from Sighisoara
